Dog Welfare Organizations: IVO Advancing Dog Welfare in Tanzania

A dog is a man’s best friend. Bringing powerful love, undying loyalty, and pure joy into our lives, dogs are indeed invaluable friends and companions—even family. Sadly, that goodness is not always reciprocated. Dogs around the globe face poor living conditions and inhumane treatment every day. Here’s how you can help them by supporting dog welfare today!

Dog Welfare

Promoting dog welfare is about addressing the conditions in which dogs live. While many of us love to pamper our pets, dogs face serious and threatening circumstances around the world.

One major problem is overpopulation. Dog overpopulation means there is an overabundance of strays, which constitutes a dog welfare crisis and a problem for community health, too. Dogs on the street are vulnerable to dehydration, starvation, injury, and disease. Tragically, many communities are unequipped to manage so many strays, and often resort to inhumane killing to address the problem.

Another common issue is dog rabies, which can spread among dog populations and pass to humans through dog bites. The World Health Organization names rabies vaccination for dogs as “the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies.” However, dog vaccines can be inaccessible to certain communities without veterinary care or resources.

For these reasons and more, the work of dog welfare organizations is essential. They advocate for dog welfare around the world, improving conditions one dog at a time. Here at IVO, we’re championing dog welfare in Dodoma, Tanzania, where rabies and overpopulation concerns have led to unethical mass cullings. Here’s how we’re helping to change the game for the dogs of Dodoma.

Advancing Dog Welfare, One Health, and the Veterinary Profession in Dodoma, Tanzania

Without a single small animal veterinary clinic in the city, Dodoma is rife with animal suffering. The estimated 13,000-26,000 dogs in the area are vulnerable to contagious diseases (particularly dog rabies) and are subject to inhumane killing.

As an advocate of dog welfare and a crucial resource for humane treatment, we at IVO will bring love and support to these dogs. In October 2022, we will bring preventative care, spay/neuter services, and humane education to Dodoma, Tanzania as part of a comprehensive 10-day training program. Lend your support to the dogs of Dodoma and donate today to help us make significant strides for our furry friends!
