East Bay (Martinez, CA)

Program Background

After the pandemic in 2023, IVO resumed its East Bay Program, but this time in Martinez, CA, with the same goals: Deliver essential veterinary services to low-income families while providing hands-on training in a high-quality high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) setting for early career veterinary professionals.

In partnership with Contra Costa Animal Services and Contra Costa Humane Society, the program offers monthly clinics that provide free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, parasite treatments, and microchipping for pets in need. The program also serves community cats and shelter animals, focusing on high-risk areas to prevent disease and control indiscriminate breeding.

Program Start Year: 2023

Our Work in 2025

In 2025, the East Bay Program provided veterinary care for 110 animals, including 61 dogs and 49 cats. Veterinary students gained practical experience in anesthesia, surgery, and client education, helping them develop critical skills while supporting community welfare. The program’s outreach helped prevent the surrender animals to local shelters, facilitated faster adoptions by preparing animals for foster or adoptive homes, and prevented stray cat inbreeding across Contra Costa County. Fifty-four (54) student trainings were conducted, with student leaders supporting peer learning and community engagement.
